What Is Plumbing
Plumbing comes from the Latin word plumbum which is used for lead. As the pipes were once upon a time made from lead so the word plumbing is in that correspondence. According to a definition plumbing is defined as the skilled trade of working with pipes, tubing and plumbing fixtures for drinking water systems and the drainage of waste. Plumbing also refers to pipes and fixtures that are installed in the buildings for the clean water distribution and the removal of hazardous waterborne wastes.

A person who deals in plumbing matters is called a plumber and the job description of the plumber includes installing or repairing piping systems, plumbing fixtures and equipments such as geysers and water heaters. The plumbing industry plays a vital role in any developed or underdeveloped economy because of the need for potable water and proper removal of wastes. A marked difference is there between plumbing and water and sewage systems. The plumbing systems serve one building whereas the water and sewage systems serve a group of buildings or a city. The plumbing systems in the simplest forms consist of a supply pipe leading to a fixture and a drainpipe taking the used water away from this fixture.

If we see the history of plumbing, plumbing in the ancient times was extremely rare until the modern cities became popular in 19th century. In the olden times the waste disposal system merely constituted collecting waste and dumping it on the ground or into the river. It was in 2700 B.C when the urban settlements of Indus Valley Civilization came to the fore. That was the time when the concept of standardized earthen plumbing pipes originated with broad flanges using asphalt for preventing leakages. Improvement in plumbing systems was slow until the 19th century.

Plumbing started during ancient civilizations such as the Greek, Roman, Persian, Indian, and Chinese Civilization. Finally, in 19th century the development of separate, underground water and sewage systems put an end to the open sewage waterways. The authorities put a stress on proper disposal systems to be installed. In addition to pipes and tubing, a lot of other fittings are also required in plumbing systems such as valves, Elbows, tees, and unions. The plumbing system which is installed in the homes should be checked thoroughly from time to time for the maintenance. It is necessary to get the clean and hygienic drinking water. Similarly, the plumbing for gas work is also done to ensure that people are safe from any gas leakages and the dangers of fire.

There are some regulations for the plumbing works. The government regulates the most of the plumbing work in large cities because this has the direct impact on public health, safety and welfare. There are plumbing codes for plumbing installation and repair works. These codes must be followed by the plumbers to protect the inhabitants of the buildings and to make sure that the residents are safe from any hazards.
